East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. The Civil Works Administration was established by EO 6420-B, November 9, 1933, under authority of the National Industrial Recovery Act (48 Stat. 200), June 16, 1933, to provide relief work for unemployed persons through public work projects. Between 1932 and 1935, a three-man administrative committee acted in lieu of a president at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). Called the "Triumvirate," it consisted of John J. Wilmore, Bolling H. Crenshaw, and Luther N. Duncan. The Triumvirate disolved upon Duncan's election as API president on Feb. 22, 1935. Crenshaw died in November 1935.
